What Is HIFU Ablation?

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is an investigational ablation treatment, which creates a circular lesion around the pulmonary veins, delivering HIFU energy through a balloon. The energy creates reliable, complete lesions that can block the electrical impulses that cause AF. HIFU is based on ULTRASOUND, a commonly used medical technology. The HIFU catheter is designed to maximize the effectiveness of ablation and minimize procedure time, which will be evaluated during this clinical research study.

The ProRhythm™ HIFU Ablation System consists of a generator and catheter, which work together to apply high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) energy to electrically isolate the pulmonary veins of the heart.

How Does HIFU Compare With Other Ablation Treatments?

There are currently no FDA-approved ablation treatments for Atrial Fibrillation. Even so, ablation procedures are being performed with a variety of other energy sources. The other technologies require repeated applications of energy at points around the pulmonary vein. Another advantage of HIFU ablation is that HIFU energy may also minimize the risk of clot formation during the procedure, reducing the risk of stroke.
